Market and size planning
European Bedding Set Sizing Guide for Importers
European size names are commercial labels, not a complete production specification. Importers should map every destination-market SKU to exact finished dimensions, component counts and tolerances before quotation or sampling.
Direct answer
There is no single bedding size chart that safely covers every European country and retailer. Build the order from the destination market and the buyer's own size table. State exact centimetre dimensions for each duvet cover, sheet, pillowcase and decorative component, then add mattress depth, set count, tolerance, labels and packaging for each SKU.

Why size names are not enough
Terms such as Single, Double, King and Super King help shoppers navigate a range, but they do not guarantee the same dimensions across countries, retailers or product types. Continental European and UK assortments may also use different component conventions. A buyer should preserve the familiar market-facing name while giving the factory a separate, measurable production definition.
Do not infer duvet-cover dimensions from a mattress name. A mattress, fitted sheet, flat sheet, duvet insert and duvet cover each have their own measurements and fit requirements. The site's global bedding size guide provides the broader market checklist.
Define every component separately
| Component | Required size fields | Additional decisions |
|---|---|---|
| Duvet cover | Finished width and length | Closure type, opening position, ties if required |
| Fitted sheet | Mattress width, length and depth; finished pocket depth | Elastic coverage, corner construction and fit allowance |
| Flat sheet | Finished width and length | Hem dimensions, intended tuck or top-sheet use |
| Pillowcase | Usable finished width and length | Envelope depth, flange, closure and quantity per set |
| Bed skirt | Platform width and length; finished drop | Corner treatment, pleats, gathers and deck material |
| Quilt or coverlet | Finished width and length | Intended mattress coverage, quilting and edge finish |
The specification should state whether dimensions are before or after washing, how they are measured and which tolerance applies. Use the measurement and tolerance guide for the inspection method.
Build a country and retailer SKU matrix
Use one row for each sellable SKU. Keep the consumer-facing size name, but add the destination, exact dimensions and component configuration. This prevents a familiar label from being mistaken for a universal measurement.
| Matrix field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Destination | Country or region and sales channel |
| Retail size name | The name printed on the pack and used in the listing |
| Internal SKU | Unique style, colour and size identifier |
| Set configuration | Every component and quantity per set |
| Finished dimensions | Width, length, depth, drop or envelope in centimetres as applicable |
| Tolerance | Approved measurement tolerance and test condition |
| Label and pack | Size wording, barcode, language and packaging version |
| Order quantity | Units for this exact SKU |
The size-conversion and SKU guide explains how to keep source dimensions, market names and identifiers aligned.
Check fitted-sheet depth and elastic construction
A fitted sheet must be matched to mattress width, length and depth. The brief should also state whether the stated depth includes the intended tuck-under allowance, and whether elastic runs around the full perimeter or only at the corners. Review the actual mattress profile if toppers, protectors or hospitality specifications change the required fit.
Measure the sample on the intended mattress or an agreed fixture, record corner fit and edge retention, and confirm the measurement method before bulk inspection. The fitted-sheet specification guide covers these fields in more detail.
Confirm duvet, cover and pillow fit
Record the duvet insert and duvet-cover dimensions separately. The buyer should decide the intended relationship between them and approve the finished appearance with the selected material and closure. For pillowcases, specify the usable internal size as well as any envelope, flange, Oxford border or decorative edge.
A four-piece set name also does not define its contents. List each component and count explicitly. The set configuration guide helps prevent component-count assumptions.
Plan shrinkage, tolerance and sample approval
Fabric, construction and care method can affect dimensional change. State whether the finished-size requirement applies before or after the agreed care cycle, define the measurement points and approve the permissible tolerance. Align the size table with any wash-test method used for the programme.
- Measure every component from the same dated specification.
- Check fitted-sheet depth, elastic placement and corner fit.
- Verify pillowcase usable size, opening and decorative borders.
- Confirm the label, barcode and package use the correct market size name.
- Repeat the agreed measurements after care when wash performance is part of approval.
- Keep the approved sample and measurement record for bulk inspection.
Use the shrinkage and wash-test guide and sample approval checklist for this stage.
Prepare labels and packaging for each market
The retail label should use the intended market-facing size name while the product file preserves exact dimensions. Confirm language, fibre and care information, country-of-origin wording, barcode, component count and pack artwork for the destination requirements. The responsible importer should verify applicable legal and retailer rules for the actual market.
European bedding size FAQ
Is there one standard European bedding size chart?
No single size-name chart should be used for every European market. Size names and component dimensions can differ by country, retailer and product range, so importers should approve exact finished dimensions in centimetres for every SKU.
What dimensions belong in a European bedding set brief?
List the finished width and length of every component, mattress width, length and depth for fitted sheets, pillowcase dimensions, closure or drop details, component count, measurement tolerance and any wash-related allowance.
Can mattress dimensions be used as duvet-cover dimensions?
No. Mattress, duvet insert, duvet cover and sheet dimensions describe different products. Record each separately and confirm the intended fit for the destination market.
